What's Happening in Fifth Grade?
September 15, 2016
The fifth grade at St. James School continues to work diligently on their studies. It is amazing to believe that we have been in school already for over five weeks. We have been having a great time so far this year.
In math class, we are wrapping up our unit on addition and subtraction of decimals and will begin our unit on multiplication. We will also begin working on knowing our multiplication facts instantaneously. This will help us when we start work on division.
In social studies, we are working on early explorers. We will be learning about early explorers from Europe and discussing what were their reasons for their explorations. We will read about Christopher Columbus and his expeditions. We will also learn how the Columbian Exchange affected the Eastern and Western Hemisphere.
In science class, we have begun our unit on the Moon. We will be studying why the moon changes and learning about the different moon phases. We will keep a moon calendar to chart a week of the different phases.
In computer class, we learned how to use the program Power Point and are currently working on a presentation about ourselves. The "All About Me" presentation includes details about our favorite things and our daily lives. We have really been enjoying this project.
As you can see, we have been very busy in class, but we have been having a great time. We wish many blessings on all!

The fifth grade at St. James School is happy to be back. There have been some changes since last year. Our classroom moved across the parking lot into the original school building. After some painting and refinishing of some floors, we have a nice new classroom which we are enjoying.
Over the past few weeks, we have been working very hard. In math class, we have been working with exponents and place value. We have learned how to write numbers in expanded form using exponents and about place value of whole numbers and decimals.
In social studies, we have been reading how early people came to the Americas. We also have read about some of the early Native Americans and civilizations living the North and South America. We have also reviewed and tested over the continents and main oceans.
In reading, we have completed the novel The Whipping Boy. We really enjoyed the book and had a great time reading it. Over the next week, we will be working on a castle project that depicts the story elements of the story.
It has been a great start to our fifth grade year, and we look forward to an exciting and fun-filled year.
